First and foremost, our team at Gateway Church Downtown is the members. These are followers of Jesus Christ who have covenanted to serve this local representation of Christ's Body through loving God, living in community, and serving the city.

"Elder" is the biblical term for those who do the shepherding work of the church. You may be more familiar with the term "pastor." In the New Testament, the terms "elder," "overseer," and "pastor" refer to the same role. For clarity's sake, we typically use the term "pastor" for elders who are paid staff members, but it would not be inaccurate to call all our elders "pastors." The following serve as elders of Gateway Church Downtown:

Chris Schwab

Chris Schwab is Lead Pastor at Gateway Church Downtown. Chris came to Gateway in 2015 after nearly a decade in pastoral ministry in Cleveland, Ohio. As Lead Pastor, Chris serves as "first among equals" with the other elders and takes particular responsibility for the preaching ministry and vision-casting of Gateway. As our only full-time staff member, he also has primary oversight over the day-to-day affairs of the church.

Chris raise in Bloomington, Illinois and graduated from Taylor University (B.A., 2001) and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (M.Div., 2006). He lives in Cleveland's Central neighborhood with his wife, Sarah (married, 2003) and has four children: Jonah, Micah, Elijah, and Silas. Chris is an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, loves music, and enjoys biking along the Ohio & Erie Canalway towpath.

Philip Major

Philip Major is one of the lay elders at Gateway Church Downtown. He came to Gateway after a stint with Agape Italia (a ministry of Cru to Italy) and served for a time as an interim teacher.

Philip was raised in Holmes County, Ohio and graduated from Hiram College (B.A., 2010; M.A., 2012). He lives in Cleveland with his wife Ashley (married, 2016) where he is engaged in his hobbies of soccer and growing facial hair.

Bryan Pummel

Bryan Pummel is one of the lay elders of Gateway Church Downtown. Bryan was raised in Cleveland's eastern suburbs but is passionate about God's redemptive work in cities, which eventually led him downtown.

Bryan graduated from The King's College (B.A., 2008) in New York, New York. He lives in Wickliffe and is passionate about the Cleveland Indians, C. S. Lewis, romantic comedies, and smoothies.
