First and foremost, our team at Gateway Church Downtown is the members. These are followers of Jesus Christ who have covenanted to serve this local representation of Christ's Body through loving God, living in community, and serving the city. Under Jesus Christ, the congregation of members has the final authority in the local church.

"Elder" is the biblical term for those who do the shepherding work of the church. (You may be more familiar with the term "pastor," which we use also. The New Testament uses both terms to refer to the same office.)
Bryan Pummel is one of the lay elders of Gateway Church Downtown. Bryan was raised in Cleveland's eastern suburbs but is passionate about God's redemptive work in cities, which eventually led him downtown. Bryan graduated from The King's College (B.A., 2008) in New York, New York. He lives in Wickliffe and is passionate about the Cleveland Indians, C. S. Lewis, romantic comedies, and smoothies.
Chris Schwab is Lead Pastor at Gateway Church Downtown. Chris came to Gateway in 2015 after nearly a decade in pastoral ministry in Cleveland, Ohio. As Lead Pastor, Chris servestakes particular responsibility for the preaching ministry and vision-casting of Gateway. As our only full-time staff member, he also has primary oversight over the day-to-day affairs of the church. Chris was graduated from Taylor University (B.A., 2001) and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (M.Div., 2006). He lives in Cleveland's Central neighborhood with his wife, Sarah, and four boys. Chris is an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, loves music, and enjoys biking along the Ohio & Erie Canalway towpath.
"Deacon" is a biblical term for those who have special responsibility for serving the church body. Our deacons typically provide organization and basic oversight to ministries that help our church to function well.
